How many public holidays are there in Belgium?
Belgium has 10 statutory public holidays each year. Every employee is entitled to them, regardless of sector or contract.
What if a public holiday falls on a weekend?
If a statutory holiday falls on a Sunday or on a normal non-working day at your workplace, your employer must assign a replacement day. In many standard five-day schedules that also means a holiday on Saturday. In 2027, Labour Day falls on Saturday 1 May, Assumption Day on Sunday 15 August, and Christmas Day on Saturday 25 December.
What are bridge days?
Bridge days are working days between a public holiday and a weekend. By taking that one day off, you create a long weekend. In 2027, Friday 7 May after Ascension is the strongest single bridge day: take 1 day, get 4 days off.
Do I get a replacement day?
Yes. If a public holiday falls on a Sunday or on a day you normally do not work, you are entitled to a paid replacement day. Your employer decides when, often in consultation with employee representatives.
